Permeable driveway

There are three main types of driveway solutions:

• Permeable driveways allow water to flow through their permeable layers to be redirected away from stormwater drains.
• Pervious driveways collect water on their surface and allow it to slowly filter through, where it will finally be directed to plants, grass, and trees.
• Porous driveways catch water and allow it to slowly, but immediately filter through porous materials and straight into the ground below the surface.

1. Water lands on the surface of the pervious driveway
2. Water infiltrates the porous driveway and begins to filter through
3. The filtered water reaches the ground or other surface beneath the permeable driveway
4. This water will return at a rate dictated by the type of system being used

There are many benefits to having permeable driveways, porous driveways, or pervious driveways that far surpass those of traditional driveway methods.

As the primary generators of stormwater entering overburdened local catchments, traditional driveways contribute to:

• Increased flooding
• Increased runoff
• Hotter surfaces 
• More contaminants entering systems

Pervious driveway systems do a great job at reversing these negative effects. They also provide the dual benefit of maximising land usage by removing the need for stormwater detention ponds where water is treated before it enters systems.
