What are the main types of footpath products?

There are three main types of pavement solutions, each being composed of different materials to perform different functions.

  1. Permeable pavements are made from separate permeable layers which allows water to slowly but surely filter through.
  2. Pervious pavements collect water on the surface, which then works through usually a single layer of pervious material.
  3. Porous pavements use porous materials like sand and gravel to filter water through and into the ground below.

How do permeable footpaths and pavements work?

Permeable pavements work like other water filtration ground solutions to improve how water is returned to the ground and local water catchments.

  1. Rainwater lands on the permeable pavement, or flows to the surface from another source.
  2. As the water pools, it begins to work its way through the porous, permeable, or pervious layers.
  3. Filtered water reaches its endpoint - either the ground, or another channel for deliver elsewhere.
  4. This water will be delivered where it is intended at a rate specified by the particular product chosen.
